The Historic Preservation Commission was formed in December of 2006 to:
- Preserve historic structures, architecture, streetscapes and neighborhoods.
- Promote the adaptive reuse of the surrounding environment through planning, preservation and education.
- To recognize preservation efforts to encourage community support in ongoing historic preservation endeavors.
The Commission helped to establish an historic district in the downtown, which is now in place. In 2010 the Commercial Historic Downtown District was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
A "Certificate of Appropriateness Application" in accordance with Title 15.25, Ordinance 1247-2006, of the City of Angola, Indiana is required for any structure located in a locally designated historic district, a Certificate of Appropriateness must be issued by the Angola Historic Preservation Commission before any permit is issued or work is begun on any of the following:
- demolition or moving of any building
- a conspicuous change in the exterior appearance of existing buildings by additions, reconstruction, alteration, or maintenance involving exterior color changes
- any new construction
- a change in walls or fences or construction of walls and fences
- or a conspicuous change in the exterior appearance of non-historic buildings subject to view from the public way by additions, reconstruction, alteration, or maintenance involving exterior color change
In addition to this application, there may be requirements of other state and/or local laws and regulations with which you must comply in order to undertake the project.

Facade Grant Program
There is a Facade Grant Program for business owners within the designated Commercial Historic District. Facade grants require the approval of Angola's Common Council, but must get approval for their project through the City's Historic Preservation Commission.
