The Angola Wastewater Treatment Plant is a Class III facility designed for an average daily flow of 1.7 MGD. With a conventional activated sludge process, our plant consistently removes more than 95% of the biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, and ammonia.
This process includes both physical and biological treatment including such equipment as screening, grit removal, primary clarification, secondary aeration, and UV disinfection before discharging effluent to the H. D. Wood Ditch. This ditch eventually flows into the Pigeon Creek which in turn flows into Long Lake and eventually into the St. Joseph River. Since the St. Joseph River flows into Lake Michigan , the City of Angola is under the jurisdiction of the Great Lakes Initiative and must therefore maintain effluent limits of Total Phosphorus below 1.0 mg/L.
Staff Operations
The Angola WWTP is staffed by nine employees including the superintendent, seven operators, and a laboratory technician. These employees are responsible for the safe and efficient collection, transportation, treatment, and discharge of wastewater from Angola and its industries. The staff maintains not only the treatment plant, but also the 21 lift stations which pump sewage to the WWTP, and well over 50 miles of sanitary sewers within Angola.
CSO Information
Some of the sewers in Angola are "combined." Combined sewers collect both sanitary waste and storm water in wet weather. These combined sewers designed and constructed several years ago result in the bypass of untreated sewage during heavy rains or excessive snowmelt. This untreated sewage ends up downstream in the watershed helping to contribute to water quality problems in the Pigeon Creek Watershed. Over the past decade, Angola has spent around $12 million to reduce Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO's) and in fact has reduced the frequency and duration of the bypass of sewage to the H.D.
